Imagine a line passing through the center of Earth that goes through both the North Pole and the South Pole. This imaginary line is called an axis. Earth spins around its axis, just as a top spins around its spindle. This spinning movement is called Earth's rotation. At the same time that the Earth spins on its axis, it also orbits, or revolves around the Sun. This movement is called revolution.

How do rotation and revolution affect the earth?

Earth's rotation is the rotation of Planet Earth around its own axis. Earth rotates eastward , in prograde motion. As viewed from the north pole star Polaris , Earth turns anti clockwise. This point is distinct from Earth's North Magnetic Pole. The South Pole is the other point where Earth's axis of rotation intersects its surface, in Antarctica.

Combined, the spinning and the revolution of the Earth causes our daily weather and global climate by affecting wind direction, temperature, ocean currents and precipitation. The immediate conditions of the atmosphere --temperature, pressure, humidity, precipitation, cloud cover and wind--at a given place and time is what creates local weather. Climate, on the other hand, is the long-term change of the atmosphere based on analysis of weather records over at least 30 years. The two factors that most strongly affect climate and weather are temperature and precipitation. It is on this axis that the earth rotates every 24 hours. Since the axis is tilted, the effects of revolution of the Earth is different for different parts of the globe. Certain areas are tipped towards, or away from, the sun at different times of the year.
