An aptitude test is a systematic means of testing a job candidate's abilities to perform specific tasks and react to a range of different situations. The tests each have a standardised method of administration and scoring, with the results quantified and compared with all other test takers. No prior knowledge is assumed, as the tests seek to determine innate ability at a particular competency. The secret to not being intimidated by tests? Aptitude tests are increasingly administered online — most often after a candidate has made their initial job application — and are used to filter unsuitable applicants out of the selection process, without the need for time-consuming one-to-one job interviews. No test is perfect, but all aim to give an indication of how candidates will respond to the challenges they will face in their day-to-day role at a firm.
Over , people have improved their test performance using AssessmentDay. Join them to beat the competition. I used mostly numerical and logical tests, and they showed to be very helpful. I passed all the real tests. It was especially useful for the PwC assessment. Excellent explanations in the answers plus tips for avoiding common errors. As revision exercises I found these most helpful and would certainly recommend them.
Whichever type of test you are given, the questions are almost always presented in multiple-choice format and have definite correct and incorrect answers. As you proceed through the test, the questions may become more difficult and you will usually find that there are more questions than you can comfortably complete in the time allowed. Very few people manage to finish these tests and the object is simply to give as many correct answers as you can. Your score is then compared with the results of a control group which has taken the tests in the past. This control group could consist of other graduates, current job holders or a sample of the population as a whole. Your reasoning skills can then be assessed in relation to this control group and judgements made about your ability.

It has been designed to provide you the best chance of success. Many different types of practice tests are included in the pack, all outlined below. Numerical tests assess your ability to work with numbers. These tests are designed to check how quickly and accurately you can find mistakes in tables and other informational sources. You are presented with a string of either numerical, alphabetical, or alphanumerical data, and you must compare this string to either a number of different possibilities or to a line in a piece of text. Generally, you will be under strict, timed conditions, with approximately only 20 seconds to answer each question. On spatial reasoning tests, you are assessed on your ability to examine orientation in two- and three- dimensional spaces.
Mechanical reasoning tests measure your ability to understand and apply mechanical concepts and principles in order to solve problems. These tests are usually multiple choice and under timed conditions. You will typically have no more than 40 seconds to complete each question. As you can see from the above, these tests are not easy.
