Hey ho, nobody home, meat nor drink nor money have I none Yet shall we be merry, hey ho, nobody home Hey ho, nobody home, meat nor drink nor money have I none Yet shall we be merry, hey ho, nobody home Hey ho, nobody home. Soal, a soal, a soal cake, please good missus a soul cake An apple, a pear, a plum, a cherry Any good thing to make us all merry One for Peter, two for Paul, three for him who made us all. God bless the master of this house, and the mistress also And all the little children that round your table grow The cattle in your stable and the dog by your front door And all that dwells within your gates We wish you ten times more. Go down into the cellar and see what you can find If the barrels are not empty we hope you will be kind We hope you will be kind with your apple and strawber' For we'll come no more a 'soalin' till this time next year. The streets are very dirty, my shoes are very thin I have a little pocket to put a penny in If you haven't got a penny, a ha' penny will do If you haven't got a ha' penny then god bless you. Now to the lord sing praises all you within this place And with true love and brotherhood each other now embrace This holy tide of Christmas of beauty and of grace Oh tidings of comfort and joy.

Some very beautiful Sixties Christmas music comes from traditional folk tunes, and Peter Paul and Mary do a beautiful job of combining several in A Soalin'.

A 'Soalin' is not a Christmas Song. You are like totally forgiven if this one is a little obscure. I had nearly forgotten this song. But it seems to be making a comeback because I have heard it several times this year. It was recorded and popularized by Peter, Paul, and Mary in on their album or LP as we also called them way back in nineteen dickety three Peter, Paul, and Mary in Concert. It's really well done by those proto-hippies. They took an traditional English folk song, tacked on a verse about Christmas which never existed before them, claimed songwriter credits.

Peter, Paul & Mary:A' Soalin' Lyrics

As the harvest season ended and the days became shorter, the Celts celebrated Samhain, when the souls of the dead returned to the world of the living. Bonfires were lit to ward off evil; offerings were made to the restive spirits.

A soul cake , also known as a soulmass-cake , is a small round cake which is traditionally made for All Hallows' Eve , All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day to commemorate the dead in the Christian tradition. In Lancashire and in the North-east of England soul cakes were known as Harcakes. Any leftover soul cakes are shared among the distributing family or given to the poor. The tradition of giving soul cakes was celebrated in Britain or Ireland during the Middle Ages , [11] although similar practices for the souls of the dead were found as far south as Italy. The cakes are usually filled with allspice , nutmeg , cinnamon , ginger or other sweet spices, raisins or currants , and before baking are topped with the mark of a cross to signify that these were alms. They were traditionally set out with glasses of wine, an offering for the dead as in early Christian tradition, [13] and either on All Hallows' Eve Halloween , [14] All Saints' Day or All Souls' Day , children would go "souling", [15] or ritually begging for cakes door to door. Souling is a Christian practice carried out during Allhallowtide and Christmastide.
