On main campus for research and teaching in plant, animal, food processing and bio-resource, Human Nutrition, Agri-Food Materials, Genomics and Proteomics and Food Microbiology. AFNS offers both thesis-based and course-based programs as well as a combined degree with the School of Business. Research disciplines include nutrition and metabolism, microbiology, immunology, reproductive physiology, genetics and genomics, meat quality, and ethology to support optimal health and production efficiency in domestic animal species. Food Science and Bioresource Technology research takes an integrated approach to value-added utilization of agricultural commodities, targeting both food and industrial products. Human Nutrition research explores the links between all aspects of nutrition and human health with the ultimate goal of preventing diseases and enhancing the quality of life. Plant Biosystems research crosses many disciplines in the areas of plant physiology, biochemistry,plant breeding, weed management, plant pathology, and rangeland management. Additional Research Stations an hour drive from campus include the Ministik Wildlife Field Station and the Kinsella Research Ranch used for extensive beef cattle research. On the main campus the Department is home to laboratory space and equipment including greenhouses, plant growth facilities, a Human Nutrition Research Unit, an Agri-Food Materials Science Lab, an Agriculture Genomics and Proteomics lab, a Food Microbiology lab, and extensive sensory and consumer science facilities.
