It was an incongruous pairing of sound and image. Just in time for its 25th anniversary, Once Upon a Time… is creeping back into the zeitgeist. The basic narrative follows a nameless girl on her journeys in the land of Never-Never, including her rendezvous with destiny and true love. Timeless archetypes, to be sure, but ones that Summer and her songwriting partners and producers, Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte, explored in new ways—namely, by conveying them through the sounds of disco and its adult concerns. The record received mixed reviews upon its release, its detractors citing its opera-like conception as heavy-handed; today, it stands as perhaps the most ambitious and fully realized dance music album ever made.

Main page. The only superstar performer disco ever produced, Summer has a good voice and substantial songwriting talent, but her great gift is acting: she projected a hedonistic sexual image so effectively she became the poster child for 70s excess. She and Moroder cranked out an amazing number of successful singles and albums from to , going their separate ways after the disco backlash. Since then, Summer scored a number of hits in different genres even picking up Grammys for gospel recording , but her sales have been inconsistent, and nowadays she's basically just a top-flight nostalgia act. Written and produced by Moroder and Bellotte like the followups, but it's folk-rock "Born To Die" and pop "Domino" rather than dancefloor-oriented.
Once Upon a Time...
By the Disco era was in full swing and Donna Summer was certainly being worked hard to capitalise on this. This tied in with the Christmas market I got it as a Christmas present that year, I recall and actually had a free calendar inside. Visually, it was certainly different to what had gone before as the soft-focus images of Donna were replaced by strong, sharp photos. Musically, it felt a little stingy, with four tracks covering the seasons and a reprise of one track which had gone on for too long anyway. In the US it proved to be the second album in a row without a Top 40 hit single. On the second side amidst the strong soul ballad and okay disco tracks was the sound of the future. It is often credited as being the most influential dance track of all time.

The death of Donna Summer from cancer last week had a particular affect on me, as she is responsible for one of my favourite albums of all time: the underrated Once Upon A Time Donna plays a desperately lonely fantasist dreaming of her Prince Charming. Or do they? It has always seemed to me that the end of this story is one written by a classic untrustworthy narrator. Pull the other one. Most likely, no such plot complexity was in the minds of the team of Summer, Moroder and Pete Bellotte as they spontaneously threw it together in the 3-day recording session that ended with Donna being hospitalized for exhaustion.
