If you've been keeping up with the second season of " The Legend of Korra " then you know last week's episode , " Civil Wars, Part 1 ," ended as a shock when Korra's parents were arrested by Korra's uncle! With a war brewing between the Northern and Southern Water Tribes, it's hard to determine how this will play out, especially seeing how Korra is placed directly in the middle of the drama. While they wait Bolin comments that this is a perfect place to hide from his terrifying girlfriend, Eska. Then without hesitation who should show up but the twins Eska and Desna. Fortunately for Bolin, the twins explain they are there to find Varrick to charge arrest him along with Korra's parents. It's hard not to compare this episode to the pilot of season one: both were hour-long premieres tasked with the admittedly difficult job of introducing us to new worlds and concepts while also being an entertaining piece of television. Overall, I think the pilot succeeded in that. This episode, on the other hand, mostly fell flat for me. Which is not to say there weren't a lot of great things being put into motion; the episode succeeded at the former of its two jobs Rebel Spirit sets up what appears to be the central conflict this season: the Southern Water Tribe's lax spirituality versus the more orthodox Northern Tribe. One of this show's strengths is establishing interesting conflicts in which the "bad guys" have a good point, such as how the Equalists were absolutely correct that the treatment of non-benders needed to change. However, one of this show's weaknesses is the inability to explore that to its fullest and make a meaningful statement.

If this is the first time you're seeing this post, welcome! The best moments focused on Korra and Tenzin coming to grips with their respective personal baggage—namely, the expectations they have for themselves and that they feel others have for them. Certainly this has been a struggle for Korra since Book 1, as she's never been entirely sure what her role as the Avatar means, beyond kicking ass and taking names. It was the one aspect of her role as Avatar that was missing, one that Aang had become known for, and the aspect of being the Avatar that she struggled with the most. As Unalaq's malevolent machinations became clearer, though, Korra fell back into her normal approach to being the Avatar and peacekeeper: Punch-punch-kick. She was a saber-toothed moose-lion in a china shop, pushing her way around the structures of power because it was her duty to maintain the peace of the world, even to the point of isolating herself from her friends and potential allies. Unalaq was Korra's uncle.
