Friday the 13th: The Game is a survival horror video game formerly developed by IllFonic , and published by Gun Media. It is based on the film franchise of the same name. It was released on May 26, as a digital release and later released on October 13, as a physical release for Microsoft Windows , PlayStation 4 , and Xbox One. A Nintendo Switch version was released on August 13, The game is an asymmetrical multiplayer game , pitting up to seven players controlling Camp Crystal Lake counselors against one player controlling Jason Voorhees. John Carpenter's slasher was made for a tiny budget and later became one of the most successful independent movies of all time. Friday The 13th director Sean S. Cunningham designed his movie around the formula pioneered by Halloween , featuring a group of camp counselors being picked off one by one by a mystery killer. The big selling point of Friday The 13th was the gore, with each kill being creatively gruesome. The original film also played like a whodunnit, with the killer eventually revealed as Pamela Voorhees, who was driven insane by the death of her son Jason. The franchise's robust formula would see it receive almost annual sequels throughout the s. The series has also received a couple of video game adaptations, including 's Friday The 13th: The Game.
Last month, the ongoing legal battles over the rights of the Friday the 13th franchise caught up with the game, bringing its development to a halt. In October , publisher Gun Media released a live-action teaser trailer for a game called Summer Camp that hinted at some kind of 80s slasher movie experience. Horror fans who had been waiting since the NES days for another Friday the 13th game were thrilled at the promised features pulled straight from the film series, from locations to characters to kills. Repetitive gameplay, long wait times, server issues, and copious bugs led to middling critical reviews, but player reviews put a different spin on the problems. Playing as a survivor, you mostly just opened drawers until you were killed, then waited up to 20 minutes for the next match to start. Out of the staleness rose the teamkillers , those who took advantage of game mechanics to kill counselors as counselors.
It was released on May 26th, for digital stores and the physical copies were released on October 13th, The game was released on Nintendo Switch on August 13, Friday the 13th: The Game is a semi-open world third-person survival horror game set in the fictional camp of Crystal Lake in the Friday the 13th franchise. When I reviewed the original launch version of Friday the 13th for another site, I came in with high hopes for something that captured the things I love about the iconic slasher series, and in many ways, it did a fine job of that. For a start, it brought so many of the great locations, characters, and Jasons to life, complete with the musical score that almost immediately comes into your head when someone so much as mentions Jason Voorhees. Best of all, the 1v7 asymmetric multiplayer setup of it is by far the best idea for a slasher series being made into a game. Playing as Jason is powerful and exciting. Playing as the counselors with a group of friends though? All manner of technical issues plagued the game at launch, putting developer Illfonic on the back foot. The base game works as well as it ever has.
Another update for Friday the 13th: The Game is upon us and once again it focuses on improving the player experience by ironing out a handful of bugs. This upcoming patch aims to address several prominent issues that have been documented by players on the forums and elsewhere, such as interaction locks for both counselors and Jason, various exploits, and Virtual Cabin 2. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the aforementioned legal dispute, restrictions were placed on the creation of new content, which forced the studio to cease all development immediately. That being said, the developer can continue to fix issues, add polish, and work on other improvements, but the sad reality is that no further content releases are anywhere on the horizon. Even so, kudos to the team for continuing to support their product and make the game better, even if only a little bit at a time.

Gun Media first shared its concept of an asymmetrical horror title way back in October of Indeed, the folks behind Gun Media openly expressed their true desire to make a fully fledged Friday the 13 th game, but of course licensing issues prevented that dream from becoming a reality so they figured Summer Camp would be the next best thing. However, in early , Gun Media was approached by none other than Sean S.
